Summary

"This is a book about making art。 Ordinary art。 Ordinary art means something like: all art not made by Mozart。 After all, art is rarely made by Mozart-like people; essentially-statistically speaking-there aren't any people like that。 Geniuses get made once-a-century or so, yet good art gets made all the time, so to equate the making of art with the workings of genius removes this intimately human activity to a strangely unreachable and unknowable place。 For all practical purposes making art can be examined in great detail without ever getting entangled in the very remote problems of genius。"

This could be a one-sitting book for most ppl since it’s so short, I didn’t have the patience tho。 There are beautiful and insightful moments, also a lot of ahistorical references and silly moments。 I wouldn’t call this book helpful but I would call it sweet and fun

I really recommend this book to people that, like me, suffer from terrible paralysis for analysis syndrome。 It really helps understand that the only way of being and continuing being an artist is by making art。 I’m very grateful for this book。

This was a great book and I highly recommend it to anyone, professional or amateur, who is serious about their art but struggles with philosophical/existential worries about their artwork, the art world, art education, teaching, etc。 I didn't agree with everything the book had to say, but overall it gave me a solid sense of validation and confidence, as if it was a friend telling me I'm on the right path。 This was a great book and I highly recommend it to anyone, professional or amateur, who is serious about their art but struggles with philosophical/existential worries about their artwork, the art world, art education, teaching, etc。 I didn't agree with everything the book had to say, but overall it gave me a solid sense of validation and confidence, as if it was a friend telling me I'm on the right path。 。。。more

The book is。。。 weird。 And not easy to rate。 First, the good。 I appreciate the pragmatism and lack of hysterical metaphors about magic and law of attraction。 It is truly refreshing when an author treats his readers as adults。 Also the chapters about the art scene, curators, and schools are of great value, and very down to earth。 Hard to swallow and painful as it is, it is a fact that not everybody will succeed, that the galleries and platforms are a business not a charity, that there’s no such th The book is。。。 weird。 And not easy to rate。 First, the good。 I appreciate the pragmatism and lack of hysterical metaphors about magic and law of attraction。 It is truly refreshing when an author treats his readers as adults。 Also the chapters about the art scene, curators, and schools are of great value, and very down to earth。 Hard to swallow and painful as it is, it is a fact that not everybody will succeed, that the galleries and platforms are a business not a charity, that there’s no such thing like synchronicity, and that trends can and do make and break people。 The rating should be much higher after that praise; the problem is, besides the few gems there’s also a lot of rambling and many of the essays seem abandoned halfway through or drowning in metaphors。 After a decent start, the book becomes a stream of consciousness and a bit of a tedious read。 。。。more

This book has been on my bedside table for many months, and I finally had the right time to read it。 I like the authors’ honest approach to the art life。 A lot of what they write is lessons that I’ve learned over the years through experience and obsessive over-analysis; I think it would have been helpful to have read this much earlier in my life, though I don’t know if I would have believed all of it until experience had proved it correct。 Aside from a few comments in chapters near the middle of This book has been on my bedside table for many months, and I finally had the right time to read it。 I like the authors’ honest approach to the art life。 A lot of what they write is lessons that I’ve learned over the years through experience and obsessive over-analysis; I think it would have been helpful to have read this much earlier in my life, though I don’t know if I would have believed all of it until experience had proved it correct。 Aside from a few comments in chapters near the middle of the book (which are a little too “of the moment, ca。 1990s”), I found everything here to be completely relevant and on the mark。 。。。more

Great。 Self-esteem and motivation in 100 pages。Basically, JUST DO IT!You become an artist by making art。 Do it。 No perfectionism。 ---A caveat:The authors delineate a shift when art stopped being in the service of God and became in the service of self。Art *should* be in service of God。 Place God at the center and your unique self will appear。Maybe I'll do a fuller review with quotes eventually。。。 Great。 Self-esteem and motivation in 100 pages。Basically, JUST DO IT!You become an artist by making art。 Do it。 No perfectionism。 ---A caveat:The authors delineate a shift when art stopped being in the service of God and became in the service of self。Art *should* be in service of God。 Place God at the center and your unique self will appear。Maybe I'll do a fuller review with quotes eventually。。。 。。。more

So much that resonated, so much worth thinking about。 I really appreciated a lot of these ideas and reflections - feeling connections and realizations and curiosities throughout。 And — I was annoyed to the point of distraction that the authors only referenced male artists - across genres - throughout the book。 For a book about art which should have universal appeal, there is no excuse for all examples of artists to be white male artists。 It’s lazy, and reveals both the bias and limits of the aut So much that resonated, so much worth thinking about。 I really appreciated a lot of these ideas and reflections - feeling connections and realizations and curiosities throughout。 And — I was annoyed to the point of distraction that the authors only referenced male artists - across genres - throughout the book。 For a book about art which should have universal appeal, there is no excuse for all examples of artists to be white male artists。 It’s lazy, and reveals both the bias and limits of the authors。 。。。more

This is the first art book I have read that can only be classed as a great comfort。Creating any kind of art full or part time is hard on so many levels that only artists ( like the authors themselves ) know how draining and frustrating it can be。Opening this book up to the first page I felt a sense of relief that I was not the only one out there with these secret unarticulatable thoughts。This pocket size guide is basically a map of sorts to the very difficult life that being an artist is。 With t This is the first art book I have read that can only be classed as a great comfort。Creating any kind of art full or part time is hard on so many levels that only artists ( like the authors themselves ) know how draining and frustrating it can be。Opening this book up to the first page I felt a sense of relief that I was not the only one out there with these secret unarticulatable thoughts。This pocket size guide is basically a map of sorts to the very difficult life that being an artist is。 With this map come very funny, intelligent, observant and warming advice and insights aimed at showing you yourself through the eyes of others。 。。。more

Perhaps an idiosyncratic rating, but this was something of a tonic for my recent art slump, and I plan to come back to it upon future relapse。 Not as woo-woo as Pressfield but still doesn't manage to determine whether or not art actually means anything。 Still, it helped。 Perhaps an idiosyncratic rating, but this was something of a tonic for my recent art slump, and I plan to come back to it upon future relapse。 Not as woo-woo as Pressfield but still doesn't manage to determine whether or not art actually means anything。 Still, it helped。 。。。more

Fantastic book about creativity and being an artist。 I hadn't thought of myself as a writer until this book, but I guess I am, though I just write for myself。 The book us supposed to be about why people stop creating art, but really supports and inspires the creative process。 I hilighted whole sections of this book and will reread it often。 If you create casually or professionally I suggest this book。 Fantastic book about creativity and being an artist。 I hadn't thought of myself as a writer until this book, but I guess I am, though I just write for myself。 The book us supposed to be about why people stop creating art, but really supports and inspires the creative process。 I hilighted whole sections of this book and will reread it often。 If you create casually or professionally I suggest this book。 。。。more

Valuable, concise observations about the artmaking process。My only caveat: maybe too concise。 As the book itself admits, it's not robust enough for academic inquiry and not light enough for pop self-help。 By the same token, it also seems confused about its audience: is it professional artists? Or everyday people who make art? Many of the points made here feel like they crave a deeper exploration。Still, at 122 pages, this is a quick and worthwhile read for all kinds of artists。 Valuable, concise observations about the artmaking process。My only caveat: maybe too concise。 As the book itself admits, it's not robust enough for academic inquiry and not light enough for pop self-help。 By the same token, it also seems confused about its audience: is it professional artists? The director Robert Rodriguez (Desperado, Planet Terror) recommended this in an interview and it is an absolute gem。 It achieves a simplicity and clarity that is quite unparalleled when excavating human emotion。 While it is a thin volume, it is turgid with insight into the artmaking process and can easily apply to any creative medium。 Given the omnipresence of fear in the human experience much of this can apply to other experiences as well, but its best application is toward creative endeavours。

Every artist should know the contents of this book。 There might be better books out there about these subjects, but the subjects themselves, in my opinion, are absolute must-knows as an artist。 A quick read。
